Anuschka logo     Anuschka /an-ush-ka / n. like no other.

Anuschka® is a unique creation that blends art and functionality with élan.

art

Anuschka® bags are a feast for the eyes with colors playing a powerful role in the bold designs. A wide range of abstracts, imaginary and natural scenes, depicted in muted colors of all shades and hues, transforms each handbag into an object of timeless art.

Anuschka® bags are constructed one at a time, and the personalized and individual workmanship is an integral part of each creation. Each artisan takes pride in the creation of every piece. To them, the current creation is the one and only and therefore cannot be like any other.

function

From the Anuschka®  perspective, simply painting on a handbag and calling it "wearable art" doesn’t make it so. Instead, approaching fashion through intelligent creativity and striking a pleasant balance between functionality and art not only makes it wearable art, it redefines what wearable art is!

But the Anuschka® story is not only about art. To enhance the sophistication of their bags, Anuschka® pays attention to the details—practical features, precision workmanship, signature linings, custom made hardware and branded zippers, and carefully selected, specially created rich and supple cow hide leather.

a history of Anuschka

In 1984, Swapan Basu chanced upon an opportunity to make hand painted leather accessories.  He quickly saught the help from his best friend and wife, Roma, who designed the hand painted bags while developing and refining a unique methods of painting on the leather.  Today that tried and true, one-of-a-kind process is a closely guarded family secret.

finding artists to paint the designs…

Early on Roma had to be creative to find people to paint her designs on the handbags. An established artist would never spend hours in a factory painting the same design over and over again. So, Roma saught out unemployed youths with a basic sense of art and an eagerness to make an honest living.

She recruited a handful of boys and girls who were either unemployed, socially "backward," or barely making minimum wage, and taught them her methods of creating beautiful pieces of art. Today, over 30 artists are making a good living, providing for their family, giving back to their community by recruiting others who are going through similar economic challenges they once experienced, and providing unique pieces of art to over ten countries!

next generation designer

Roma’s son, Bhaskar, grew up watching his parents working hard building the family business. He spent many summers watching his mother design and train artists and his father select leathers and coordinate process flow.

Bhaskar left India to go to college at an American university. He pursued Business Administration, and during his very first year in school he made the decision to grow the business that his parents had started to one that would cross borders and continents.

In 2000, with Swapan’s assistance, Bhaskar started Basu Corporation, which sold its first Anuschka® handbag in September of of that year. Gradually the company has grown, and today, Roma and Bhaskar employ over 30 artists and export to many countries including the USA, Canada, Bahamas, Great Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Netherlands and Belgium.  Bhaskar and Roma continue to work as team to create bold, inspired designs that capture the fashion of the season and the lifestyle of the Indian people.
